Channahon Police Warn Residents of 'Ruse Burglaries'

A con artist will try to distract you while another one enters your home.

CHANNAHON, IL — The Channahon Police Department is warning residents of possible ruse burglaries going on the city.

Police say they have received reports of the scams, which occurs when a con artist tries to distract a homeowner and another con artist will enter the home to steal valuables, usually cash and jewelry. The con artists may use a "For Sale" vehicle in a front yard as a conversation starter or identify themselves as health care workers there to check up on an elderly patient, police said.

To help prevent these crimes, police say to keep your doors and windows locked while outside performing yard work and never let a stranger into your home. If you don't have an appointment with anyone, don't answer the door to strangers. If they claim to be a utility worker, confirm with Village officials there is work scheduled in your area. Call 911 if you believe you are being scammed or have been victimized, police said.
