“Paradise is under the feet of mothers.” – Prophet Muhammad (570 CE – 632 CE)
My five years old daughter and I were shopping at Target, and suddenly she grabbed a Mother’s Day card full of inspirational thoughts about motherhood. She was very adamant to buy that card and give it to me on Mother’s Day because she loves me. I was very touched and moved to tears by her gesture although she can barely read the complex script of the card. But the word ‘mother’ caught her eye. That day I realized, I am not just any person in this world. I am responsible for another living being who is looking up to me in every aspect of her life and her existence in this society will be associated with the way of life I am offering to her.

Suddenly, all those wonderful and nice quotes, which I see during the occasion of Mothers’ Day, stare at me with a totally new significance. I begin to comprehend my obligations towards the gift of motherhood that God has bestowed upon me in the form of my lovely daughter. God has consecrated mothers to the ultimate purpose of creation. Not only are they responsible for the procreation of human life, but also the critical duty of nurturing that being into a productive member of our society. Motherhood starts with the conception of a child and in reality it never ends.
Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be on him) has beautifully portrayed the status of mothers as the highest station among all the human relations and associated it with the utmost reward that mankind can ever achieve – heaven. God has put a huge responsibility on women as mothers. The depiction of the roles and responsibilities of a mother as explained by the Prophet Muhammad constitutes the absolute denotation of the word motherhood. Mothers can make or break a whole nation. Motherhood is not an easy job and it requires loads of sacrifice. It demands sacrifice of our time, career, and freedom; but it is all for the greater cause of creating a beautiful and harmonious society, spawning a generation, which will be blessed with God’s mercy and His love.
On this Mother’s Day, why not we, as present or future mothers, reflect on the true responsibilities of motherhood? We may be doctors, engineers, artists or scientists, but most importantly many of us are or will be mothers in the future. We need to understand our importance in this universe. God has embedded motherhood in our making. We must fulfill our duties as doctors, engineers, artists, or scientists, but not at the expense of our children.
