Pet Dies In Channahon House Fire

Firefighters from Channahon and several area departments responded to Tuesday's blaze.

CHANNAHON, IL - Tuesday evening's fire in the Buenita Vista subdivision caused about $350,000 in structural damage and killed one of the family's cats. Channahon's Fire Protection District was dispatched for a structure fire at 123 Zapata Lane around 5:30 p.m. People were inside the home at the time the fire was spotted by a neighbor.

"Neighbors alerted the occupants, one adult female and one teenage male, of the fire and helped evacuate them to safety," the Channahon Fire Protection District posted on its Facebook page. "Two of the family cats were also present at the time of fire. One cat was rescued and transported by family members to a local vet clinic for evaluation. Despite noble resuscitative efforts of paramedics, the second cat did not survive."

The fire was under control around 6 p.m.

"The preliminary fire investigation suggests the cause of the fire is undetermined, however, appears accidental. The investigation currently remains open at the time of this press release. The property and contents loss is estimated to be in excess of $350,000.00. The building was ruled uninhabitable due to the damage caused by the fire and smoke," Channahon fire officials announced.

Fire agencies including Minooka, Troy, Elwood, Morris, Wilmington, Coal City, and Wilmington ESDA provided assistance. Minooka Police provided traffic control and site security. Fire companies and fire investigators remained on scene until approximately 8:35 p.m.
