Troy Celebrates Pi Day with math, reading and, of course, pie

Several Troy classrooms found cause to celebrate math on Pi Day this year, including Elizabeth Duesing’s accelerated fourth grade math class at Troy Craughwell Elementary School. The number pi, which, at 3.14159, is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. The constant has been known for centuries, and now Duesing’s students also know all about it.

On this year’s Pi Day, they spent their 90 minute math class exploring what Pi is, the parts of the circle and the degrees of circle parts, solving fun pi math equations, calculating circumference of circles and reading a book about pi.

They also ate individual yogurt pies they made themselves in class.

“They were fun and taught me about pi,” he said. “My favorite activity was eating pie. It was really good.”

Eliana’s favorite activity was also making and eating the pie.

“I loved doing the Pi Day activities because they were super fun, and we got to go outside on a super nice day,” she said.

Lily said she thought they were going to have a normal math day at first. She most enjoyed being outside in the fresh air and eating the pie while Duesing read to them.

Julio said he enjoyed finding the circumference of a circle and is now better at multiplying decimals. Emma and Ava also loved the Pi Day activities.

Parents assisted in the celebration by providing dairy-free and gluten-free materials for the students who needed them.
