Troy Middle School Scholastic Bowl Team Competes In Challenge
T.M.S., William B. Orenic Intermediate School students compete in COVID-19 Quiz Bowl Challenge
Most scholastic bowl post-season competitions were cancelled this spring due to meeting restrictions associated with the coronavirus, but thanks to Avery Enterprises, the provider of questions for post-season play, members of the Troy Middle School Scholastic Bowl Team, along with teams from 60 other middle schools across the country, were able to participate in one competition.
It was called, “The COVID-19 Quiz Bowl Challenge,” and was held virtually, with team members participating from their homes.
The challenge was free to the school teams, according to Troy School District 30-C teacher and TMS Scholastic Bowl sponsor Dr. Barbara Will-Henn.

“Avery offered to host this free challenge to ease the blues that accompanied a lack of post-season play,” Will-Henn said, “and to provide a respite for the remote learning opportunities students are immersed in at this time.”
The Troy team tied for 30th place out of the 61 schools and received 35th place after tie-breakers.

Questions were from the subject areas of math, geography, physics, biology, medicine and anatomy, literary, social studies, fine arts, sports and pop culture, and even a section devoted to COVID-19 facts, including the name of the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (Dr. Fauci).
Teams had one hour to answer the questions. Calculators were not allowed, nor were other means of looking up answers.
“The great thing was the students were engaged and had a really great time working together,” Will-Henn said. “Our students did a great job of working jointly and stimulating each other's thought processes.”
Troy students who participated were William B. Orenic Intermediate School 6th graders Ava Offermann and Caleb Price; TMS 7th graders Ben Klein, Matilda Marks, Alex Randolph, Jorgia Smidl and Kevin Trizna; and TMS 8th graders Ivan Chen, Jacob Cucci, Emily McCune, Quinn Preis, Paige Rakes and Hayden Smidl.
William B. Orenic Intermediate School and Troy Middle School are Troy Community School District 30-C schools.
