Troy School District Names Spelling Bee Winners

Eighth-grader Summit Kumar will advance to the Will County competition

Troy Community School District 30-C recently held its annual Spelling Bee, going more than 20 rounds to narrow it down to its three best spellers.

After an additional 10 rounds among the final three, eighth-grader Summit Kumar took first place; seventh-grader Sophia Delgadillo took second; and sixth-grader Vin Vasquez took third place.

According to English Language Arts teacher and one of the competition’s organizers, Shari Pagel, the word that finally gave Summit the lead was, “consciousness.” Other challenging words in the final rounds included auriferous, mawkish, pomposity and cylindrical.

The spelling bee was organized by the district’s English Language Arts teachers. Troy Crossroads Elementary School third grade teacher Emily Semplinski was the pronouncer, and judges were Curriculum Director Daniela Fountain and Human Resources Director Paul Schrik.

Summit Kumar will now advance to represent Troy at the Will County Spelling Bee on March 3.
