Troy students honor veterans

Troy 30-C students observe Veterans Day in a variety of ways

Several Troy School District 30-C schools learned the importance of honoring veterans and military troops on Veterans Day this year.

Troy Craughwell Elementary School

The school made a Wall of Honor of photos that families of veterans submitted. Students and staff also made a video thanking their service members, and shared it with the community. Students colored drawings and wrote thank you letters and gave them to Troy’s veteran bus drivers. Pictures and letters were also given to the service men and women at the local VFW.

Troy Cronin Elementary School

Students observed Veterans Day by honoring family members and school staff who served or are serving. They were named, “Veterans Day Honorees,” and information and photos of them were displayed in the classrooms. They included veterans from the U.S. Army, Marines, Air Force, Navy, National Guard and Coast Guard. Students also donated items to be included in military care packages, wrote letters and made cards for veterans, and wore red, white and blue or camo for the day.
Cronin’s library also hosted an online “listening room” where students could learn about the branches of the military, listen to books about the armed services, and even hear the songs of the branches.

Troy Heritage Trail Elementary School

Teachers shared a slideshow of HT family members who are veterans or active military. Teachers also chose from a folder of Veterans Day lessons and activities for their students. Art teacher Lauren Sandeno made a flag wall mural, and students added stars to it. Library associate Gina Rolando also made a virtual Bitmoji library to share with teachers with titles related to Veterans Day.

Troy Hofer Elementary School

Students at Troy Hofer Elementary School observed Veterans Day by performing songs that honored each branch of the military. Music teacher Elizabeth Heisz organized the music into a slideshow that was shared with families. Additionally, teacher Diane Zulkoski wrote a poem entitled, “A Soldier's Heart,” that was shared in the presentation. Many students also wore red, white, and blue on Veterans Day.

Troy Middle School

Students watched the moving documentary, “Honor Flight,” about a community that sends living World War II veterans on a trip of a lifetime to Washington, DC to see the memorial. The students also watched a slideshow of veterans who are T.M.S. families and staff. Students also collected donations of candy for the troops.

Troy Shorewood Elementary School

Several veterans who are family and friends of the school sent videos telling of their experiences serving in the military, which students and teachers watched. Slide shows of veterans were also shown to students, with information about their branches of service. Students also colored pictures and wrote letters to veterans, expressing gratitude for their service, and letters were sent to veterans at local nursing and veterans’ homes.

William B. Orenic Intermediate School

Students participated in a week’s worth of activities related to Veterans Day during morning meeting that included writing letters to veterans and learning about the history of the observation. W.B.O. families submitted photographs of veterans that the school used to create a slideshow. These photos were also on display in the school’s foyer. Many students and staff wore red, white and blue on November 11th.
