Top 5 stories in Chicago:
1) Chicago, Cook County COVID-19 threat level rises to medium. The city and county were at low threat since late September. However, the area's risk level has risen. Chicago is now seeing 107 new laboratory-confirmed cases and 7.1 new hospital admissions per 100,000 people within the last week. Cook County has 113 new cases and 10.3 hospital admissions per 100,000 people. Only 13% of Chicagoans 5 and older have gotten the new, updated COVID-19 vaccine.
2) 16 injured after school bus carrying St. Ignatius hockey team hit by semi. A 58-year-old truck driver has been charged with operating while intoxicated resulting in serious bodily injury, a level five felony, after the Warsaw, Indiana crash. The St. Ignatius College Prep junior varsity hockey team had just played at Culver Military Academy and was headed to a hotel at the time of the crash. At least one student was ejected from the bus and three people suffered injuries considered "very critical."
3) This Chicago bar stocks more than 1,200 pieces of glassware. After, a new cocktail lounge from chef Curtis Duffy and sommelier Michael Muser, is particular about the vessels holding its fancy drinks. "We always try to pay close attention to the tactile things guests interact with—things they touch, things they feel," Muser said. With that in mind, the team at the city's most lavish new bar prioritized their glassware early in the menu-development process.
4) Whole Foods Market closes Englewood location after 6 years. The 832 W. 63rd St. location, which was once a point of optimism and pride in the South Side neighborhood, closed permanently yesterday. A new grocery tenant has not yet been announced for Englewood Square, an area often considered a food desert. The 18,000-square-foot store opened in 2016, and required almost $11 million city subsidy for site preparation.
5) Two students from Chicago area among 32 latest U.S. Rhodes scholars. The 2023 class of 32 scholars was elected entirely virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the scholars are two from the Chicago area: Irena Petryk of Morton Grove, a student at Northwestern; and Lauren Kim of Chicago, who attends Harvard University. Scholars are expect to begin studies at the University of Oxford in England in October.
