2 Dead After 10 People Shot In Brighton Park Gang Retaliation: Cops

Two shooters with assault rifles opened fire Sunday during a memorial for a fatal shooting earlier that day, Chicago police officials said.

CHICAGO, IL — Two people were killed and eight were wounded Sunday in Brighton Park after two shooters with assault rifles opened fire during a memorial for a man fatally shot earlier in the day, according to Chicago police. The shooting is thought to be gang-related retaliation for the earlier murder, police officials said at a press conference Sunday at the scene of the violence in the 4600 block of South Rockwell Avenue.

Calling the incident "another brazen act of gang violence on the streets of Chicago," Deputy Superintendent Kevin Navarro said the two shooters armed with assault rifles came out of an alley at about 5:15 p.m. Sunday, May 7, and began firing on people participating in a memorial for Daniel Cardova, who had been shot and killed at around 4:30 a.m. in the neighborhood. A man and a woman were killed by the gunfire, and the wounded victims were taken to multiple area hospitals, he said. Navarro added that Cardova's shooting had been gang-related, and the weapon used also had been an assault rifle.

Additional tactical and gang teams were being moved into the area to prevent further violence in the neighborhood in the coming days, Deputy Chief Kevin Ryan said. Investigators also had leads on "the people involved," he added.

“We have a fairly good idea of the conflict involved and where we need to be deployed,” Ryan said at the news conference.

Ald. Raymond Lopez (15th Ward), who represents Brighton Park, called for residents to identify the gang members, drug dealers and the individuals supporting them in order to help stem the gun violence running through the city.

"I am thankful today that no innocent lives were lost, no children were shot, no police officers were shot. But that will not always be the case as long as we continue to harbor these kinds of criminals in our communities," he said. "We must stand together to put an end to this nonsense in our neighborhoods."
