300 Couples Gather In Chicago To Renew Vows After 50 Years Of Marriage

The couples renewed their vows Sunday at Holy Name Cathedral's Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass.

CHICAGO, IL — Hundreds of couples gathered Sunday at Holy Name Cathedral to mark 50 years of marriage.

Archbishop Blase Cupich was the celebrant at the cathedral’s annual Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass, which this year honored couples married in 1972, about 300 of whom turned out for the occasion, according to WLS.

“Married love is meant to be life-giving in whatever form possible,” the Rev. Andy Matijevic said in the cathedral’s weekly newsletter.

“And no marriage is without bumps in the road, but by looking to Jesus, by emulating Jesus in married life, all can be conquered with love. We join in celebrating the couples of the Archdiocese who celebrate 50 years of Marriage this weekend as they gather for Mass, thanking God here at the Cathedral.”

So, what does it take to sustain a marriage for five decades? According to WLS, those in attendance offered this advice: never go to bed angry, always communicate, and have a sense of humor.
