Advocate Trinity Hospital Kicks Off Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Patients, survivors and caregivers release balloons as a community reminder to get screened

To usher-in October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, nearly 50 women - breast cancer patients at various stages of treatment, survivors and clinical team members – gathered at Advocate Trinity Hospital, in Chicago, to send a signal about the importance of mammograms and how early detection can increase the rate of survivorship for breast cancer patients.

The group met in the Mammography Department to share stories and socialize over light refreshments before a non-alcoholic toast to good health and triumph over the disease that is newly diagnosed in three people a minute and claims one life every minute of the day.

“Most of us have been touched by someone who has died of breast cancer. Whether it was a mother, sister, daughter or friend,” said Lead Breast Health Coordinator Cynthia Kukla, the event organizer. “Today, we celebrate you.”

The celebration ended with each patient and supporter releasing a pink biodegradable balloon into the sky above the surrounding Southeast Side community as a reminder to get screened. Advocate Trinity will carry this message forward by illuminating the hospital in pink lights every night throughout October.
