CHICAGO—The Chicago police officer who was critically wounded in a hospital shooting last month that killed his partner was moved Thursday to a rehabilitation facility.

Until now, the police officer’s name has not been released, but his family identified him as Nelson Crespo. They have started a Go Fund Me campaign to assist with Ofcr. Crespo’s medical costs and recovery.

On April 25, Crespo and his partner, Ofcr. John Bartholomew transported an armed robbery suspect to Swedish Hospital. Bartholomew uncuffed the man, who drew out a gun that he had allegedly snuck into the hospital and shot both officers. Bartholomew died from a head wound.

The suspect, Alphanse Talley, 26, a seven-time felon, had been on electronic monitoring for an unrelated carjacking and armed robbery case when the device reportedly went dead, prosecutors said at his pre-detention hearing. There were warrants out of Talley at the time of the shooting. Talley is facing a raft of felonies, including first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.

Crespo was shot in the chin, which lodged in his neck. He has limited mobility in his arms, his family said on GoFundMe. He had more than 20 years with the Chicago Police Department.

“Nelson’s journey to recovery will be long and challenging. He will require extensive rehabilitation for the foreseeable future, and his home will need significant modifications to accommodate his new needs. These changes are essential to help him regain independence and comfort as he works toward healing. The financial burden of medical care, therapy, and home adjustments is overwhelming, and every contribution will make a meaningful difference.”
