📰 News we're reading

1. E-bike rider dies after crash at Southwest Side intersection that claimed another life a year ago (chicagotribune.com) — A Garfield Ridge e-bike rider has died after a hit-and-run crash at Archer and Laramie, the same Southwest Side intersection where an elderly pedestrian was killed 16 months ago. Chicago police say a pickup truck hit a turning sedan, then struck the rider before fleeing, and the Major Accidents Investigation Unit is still searching for the driver.

2. Annual ABC7 Chicago Hispanic Heritage Month luncheon celebrates community leaders (abc7chicago.com) — ABC7's annual Hispanic Heritage Month luncheon brought community leaders, scholars, and business owners together at its State Street Studios in downtown Chicago to kick off this year's celebrations. Guests previewed upcoming Hispanic and Latin American stories that will spotlight Chicago-area communities on TV, online, and streaming throughout the month.

3. Zillow Loses Antitrust Battle Over Chicago Area Listing Feed (claimsjournal.com) — A federal judge in Chicago has ruled that Zillow must resolve its dispute with Midwest Real Estate Data through arbitration, ending a temporary order that guaranteed its access to Chicago-area listings. The decision, framed by Zillow as a setback for local buyers and sellers, could influence how easily Chicago residents find homes on big real estate portals.

4. Report: Speed cameras ticket drivers every 48 seconds (bigcountrynewsconnection.com) — Chicago's speed cameras issued tickets so frequently in 2025 that drivers were fined roughly every 48 seconds, generating $64.2 million in revenue, according to a new analysis. Critics say Mayor Brandon Johnson's reliance on this growing income contradicts earlier promises and raises questions about whether the cameras truly improve safety or mainly burden residents going slightly over the limit.

5. Illinois asks for FEMA help after August storms (cnhi.com) — Illinois is seeking FEMA disaster aid for August storms that battered Chicago's south suburbs, including parts of Cook and Will counties, with tornadoes, 100 mph winds, and flooding. If approved, residents and local governments could get help with housing, repairs, and infrastructure, though past denials and partisan tensions in Washington make the outcome uncertain.
