Anonymous Tip, Video Footage Help Police Arrest Accused Loop Synagogue Vandal

Stuart Wright, 31, faces a felony hate crime charge after he allegedly put swastika stickers on the Chicago Loop Synagogue on Feb. 4.

CHICAGO, IL — An anonymous tip and security camera footage helped police arrest a 31-year-old man accused of vandalizing a synagogue in the Loop over the weekend.

Stuart Wright was arrested at about 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, as he left a residence in the 2100 block of South Loomis Street, according to Chicago police. He was charged with hate crime to a church or synagogue and criminal damage between $300 to $10,000 to a school, both felonies. His next court date is Thursday.

Wright, who did not give a home address, was identified in security camera video footage of the vandalism incident Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Chicago Loop Synagogue, 16 S. Clark St., police said. He allegedly placed swastika stickers on the synagogue and shattered windows at the house of worship.

Investigators also received information from the department's anonymous tip line that helped with the case, police said.

Two rewards were being offered for help leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual responsible for the vandalism: $2,500 from the Anti-Defamation League and $500 from community activist Raul Montes Jr.
