Top 5 stories in Chicago:
1) Almost 3,700 migrants have been bused to Chicago from Texas. 425 are school-aged children. State records indicate more than 150 of the migrant students are enrolled in Chicago Public Schools. Educators have raised concerns over the district's declining number of bilingual teachers and staff, as bilingual students now make up 22 percent of the district's student population.
2) Chicago has a karaoke champion! Jason E. Jackson, 45, of Edgewater was crowned karaoke champion in "Chicago Sings Karaoke," the city's first singing contest. He beat out 540 other contestants to snag the top prize of $5,000. "I'm floored, and I am so honored," said Jackson.
3) Chicago City Council approves Mayor Lightfoot's 2023 budget. City Council approved Mayor Lori Lightfoot's $16.4 billion election-year spending plan despite complaints from members that it shortchanges public safety, climate change and homelessness. Alderpeople voted 32-18 in favor of the spending plan, but split 29-21 on her property tax levy.
4) Arlington Heights Village Board approves pre-development plan on Bears' possible relocation. The plan is a non-binding "framework" agreement between the Chicago Bears and the village defining how future plans and processes will be addressed as the project develops. It is the first public acknowledgement the Bears plan to ask for public money to execute their proposal.
5) Rainbow Cone will be open all winter. Known for its cone topped with slices of orange sherbet, pistachio, Palmer House, strawberry and chocolate, the iconic ice cream shop in Beverly will be open all winter—a first since it opened in 1926. The company is also releasing a new holiday flavor and Rainbow Cone ice cream sandwiches.
