Top 5 stories in Chicago:
1) Rep. Jesus 'Chuy' Garcia will run for Chicago mayor in 2023. Garcia said in a video announcing his candidacy that he will be a mayor that works to bring people together rather than divide them. The U.S. Representative, who lives in the Little Village neighborhood, held a press conference yesterday morning to formally announce his candidacy for the office.
2) 'It's just a higher calling': Army veteran from Chicago helping rebuild Ukraine. Harrison Jozefowicz, a U.S. Army veteran, first served in Italy with the 173rd before being deployed in 2017 with the 82nd Airborne Division—a combat role in Afghanistan. After coming home, he served as a Chicago police officer for three years before quitting and heading back into a war zone to help. "Every day is a struggle and right now all they're trying to do is say 'Where is my next meal going to come from?'" Jozefowicz said.
3) Terrorism-related charges brought against teen in alleged Chicago mosque-attack plot. A Maine teenager now faces upgraded terrorism-related charges stemming from an alleged Isis-inspired plot to attack a Shiite mosque in Chicago last spring. Xavier Pelkey, 19, was charged in a two-count superseding indictment with conspiracy to provide material support for terrorism and possessing explosives.
4) How a local group is reviving Chicago River's freshwater mussels. Urban Rivers, an environmental nonprofit working to replenish and restore the Chicago River ecosystem, has helped reproduce more than 1,500 mussels, which improve water quality by filter feeding and removing pollutants. By reviving the population of freshwater mussels, the organization aims to turn the river into an eco-park and transform how people perceive the water—once notorious for its foul odor.
5) Noose found at Obama Presidential Center construction site. Construction has been temporarily halted at the building site of the Obama Presidential Center and Library after officials from the company overseeing the project said a noose was found at the worksite near Jackson Park. The company is offering a $100,000 reward to help identify anyone involved in the "act of hate."

After decades as a representational painter, she began in her 70s to explore abstraction, creating shimmering, mosaic-like fields of color with rhythmic dabs of paint, often inspired by forms or scenes from nature."
