Top stories in Chicago:
1) Updated COVID-19 vaccines available in Chicago beginning this week. With more than 99 percent of new COVID-19 cases linked to two subvariants of the omicron strain, Chicago health officials say there is no time like the present to get an updated booster shot designed specifically to target the original virus and the new strains. After the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention and Food and Drug Administration issued final approval for two updated COVID-19 bivalent vaccines last week, the City of Chicago has been allocated an initial shipment of 150,000 doses. The vaccines will be available at local pharmacies and grocery store pharmacies beginning early as Tuesday for Chicago residents ages 12 and up.
2) Monarch butterfly migration will flutter through Chicago soon. When will it peak? Don't be surprised if you see monarch butterflies fluttering across Chicago this month. Dubbed the "monarch migration," the orange and black-winged insects embark on a months-long journey through the Midwest to Mexico after breeding in Canada and other northern areas throughout the summer. Typically, an abundance of butterflies can be spotted in the area throughout September, with peak migration Sept. 5-10. The lakefront is an ideal location for monarch sightings, as they tend to fly along coastlines. Parks also popular due to the nectar found in flowers. Chicagoans will be able to see butterflies well into October, as stragglers are expected to round out the migration. The butterflies have recently dwindled in numbers, landing on the endangered species list in July.
3) Bears unveil initial Arlington Park design, won't seek stadium funding. The Chicago Bears unveiled initial design plans for the redevelopment of Arlington Park Racecourse into a potential new home for the team. They said they are committed to not seeking public funding for the stadium but will ask for financial assistance in funding the rest of the project. The release of the design for the 326-acre property does not include specific renderings of what a new stadium would look like. However, those could come as early as tomorrow during a community forum where Bears officials are expected to discuss the project. The meeting is scheduled to be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at John Hersey High School, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. on a first-come-first-served basis.
4) How to pair iconic Chicago foods with wine. Ever wonder what wine goes best with Harold's Chicken or Garrett Popcorn? When it comes to wine and food pairings, it shouldn't take too much thought. While there are certain flavor profiles that will send a palate to the moon and others that could cause one to shake their head in disgust, it's important to drink and eat what brings joy. Ultimately, the goal of a wine pairing is to balance salt, cut through the fat, complement with acidity, or cool down the heat in a food dish. From pizza to Polishes, check out six classic Chicago foods and the wines that help take them to the next level.
5) The Salt Shed a big success but music venue's noise threatens nearby production studio. The first month of concerts outside Chicago's newest music venue have been a success. But owners of Essanay Studio and Lighting Company across the river say the noise from the outdoor shows at the Salt Shed impedes their ability to record sound for their projects, which could force them to spend millions to soundproof their building and save their business. The company regularly books out its two studios to production companies for TV commercials and other video projects. Those productions often record sound, which was not a problem until music from the concerts and during afternoon soundchecks began to bleed into the studios last month. That has left Essanay unable to to guarantee productions will be able to record sound effectively, putting at risk the company's ability to conduct a large portion of its business. The Salt Shed opened Aug. 2 and hosted 10 outdoor shows throughout the month.
