Top 5 stories in Chicago:
1) Chicago Bears to unveil plans for Arlington Heights stadium and entertainment district. The Chicago Bears will reveal plans for a new stadium in Arlington Heights next week as they continue taking steps that could lead them out of Solider Field and into their own home in the suburbs. The team will present conceptual plans for an Arlington Heights stadium on Sept. 8 at John Hersey High School in the northwest suburb. Team leaders said the "transit-oriented, mixed-use entertainment district anchored by a stadium" at the now-closed Arlington Park racetrack would be "one of the largest development projects in Illinois state history." Next week's meeting is meant to show off the plan to the public and field questions. A separate approval track by the suburb's village board would need to follow. The meeting is first come, first served until the venue reaches capacity. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
2) As meteorological fall begins, national forecast predicts 'bone-chilling' Chicago winter. While Meteorological fall began yesterday with warm, summer-like temperatures and mostly clear skies through Labor Day weekend, the Chicago area isn't quite predicted to stay that way as the days continue to get shorter. The Old Farmer's Almanac released its extended forecast for the upcoming winter season, calling it a "tale of two winters" that will divide the country in two. According to this year's forecast, the Chicago area falls under the "bone-chilling cold and loads of snow" category. Parts of the upper Midwest, including the Chicago area and northwest Indiana, will potentially see "unreasonably cold and snowy" conditions this winter.
3) R. Kelly tells judge he won't testify in Chicago trial. R. Kelly's lawyers began mounting a defense yesterday in Chicago against federal charges of child pornography, enticement of minors for sex, and fixing his 2008 state trial, with an initial witness contending the singer was himself a victim of blackmail. The presentation to jurors won't include Kelly taking the witness stand. Judge Harry Leinenweber asked Kelly if he would testify, and the Grammy Award winner responded that he would not. The judge raised the issue minutes before attorneys for Kelly and two co-defendants began calling their first witnesses, endeavoring to counter two weeks of government testimony—including from four women who accused Kelly of sexual abuse.
4) CTA 'L' car spotted on Eisenhower Expressway wasn't runaway train—it's the Goose Island Brewery mobile bar. No, that's not a CTA train on the expressway, but a fully functional bar. A viral photo of what looked like a runaway train on the Eisenhower stopped many in their tracks. But the rail car is actually a promo-on-wheels for Goose Island Brewery. The retired train car, which traveled the Blue Line in the '60s, was repurposed with a cooler and draft-line system featuring 12 handles. A bartender serves out of the train car through a custom window. The car's microphone, PA system, rotating sign for stops, some of the seats and metal floors and finishes are all original. Goose Island had to reduce the width of the car so it would be legal to drive on public roads. The train is hooked up to a trailer and lugged on the highway only a handful of times a year, but is usually stationary at the brewery on Fulton Street.
5) Abortion providers get funding boost from Chicago officials. Two groups in Chicago that help individuals get abortions are getting a boost from city officials as they continue to prepare for a wave of patients. The Chicago Abortion Fund and Planned Parenthood of Illinois will receive $500,000 from the Chicago Department of Public Health. The funding, which is part of the city's Justice For All initiative, could be used to help those coming from out of state to get the medical procedure. Illinois, where abortion remains legal, is expected to get a surge of patients from states that have banned the procedure.
