Black Ice Causes Multiple Crashes In Chicago Area

Be careful out there – particularly on the Dan Expressway.

CHICAGO, IL — Black ice caused multiple crashes on Chicago area roadways Sunday night and Monday morning. Some roads have been shut down as city crews salt the slick areas. Black ice is formed when the temperature drops below 32 degrees, and can be extremely dangerous.

The Illinois Department of Transportation shut down the Canalport exit ramp on the Dan Ryan Expressway after a rollover crash late Sunday night. The driver of an SUV lost control and the vehicle flipped onto its roof, authorities said. The driver and a passenger were able to get out of the SUV, and no injuries were reported. Several other vehicles reportedly also spun out on the ramp and hit curbs.

At 130th Street and Doty Avenue, a car reportedly crashed into an ambulance after hitting slippery road conditions. ABC 7 reported the ambulance was traveling eastbound, when the westbound vehicle tried to slow down, fishtailed, and struck the ambulance before heading down an embankment. It's unknown if there were injuries. Several other crashes were also reported in the same area.
