A new scholarship program, Port to Promise, has launched in Skokie to support immigrant and first-generation students pursuing higher education.
The program will award 10 scholarships of $2,000, along with mentorship and ongoing support to help students successfully transition into college.
Founded by a local family, the initiative was created to expand access for students who may not have the guidance, networks, or resources often needed to navigate the college journey. In addition to financial support, Port to Promise focuses on mentorship, confidence-building, and long-term community.
“At its core, this initiative is about access and belief,” said Dr. Ambreen Lakhani Miraly, Executive Director of Port to Promise. “Many students have the potential to succeed, but without the right support systems, that potential often goes unrealized.”
