CHICAGO, IL — Chance the Rapper announced that Google has donated $1 million to Chicago Public Schools. The donation will go to Chance's nonprofit SocialWorks, which promotes youth empowerment through civic engagement, education and arts. Chance surprised students at Adam Clayton Powell Paideia Community Academy in the city's South Shore neighborhood with the announcement Wednesday morning.

Students at the academy had just finished participating in a Google coding workshop when Chance arrived with the news.

Google also gave $500,000 to Children First Fund to support computer science programming. The company said it believes computer science is an essential part of education and will help prepare students for the future.
