Top 5 stories in Chicago today:
1) The Chicago Air and Water Show takes flight this weekend. The Chicago Air and Water Show will take off for a two-day run Aug. 20 and 21 at North Avenue Beach. Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., hundreds of airplanes, including the iconic U.S. Navy Blue Angels, will showcase various acrobatic stunts along Lake Michigan's shoreline between Fullerton Avenue and Oak Street. Admission is free.
2) Pat Foley will fulfill his dream by calling a Cubs game at Wrigley Field. Legendary retired Blackhawks announcer Pat Foley will call the nightcap of the Cubs' doubleheader against the Cardinals Aug. 23. He'll work the first three innings on 670 The Score with Ron Coomer, move to the Marquee Sports Network booth for the middle three and finish the game on radio. He will also lead the seventh-inning stretch.
3) Chicago pension funds still among the nation's worst funded. The 2021 upturn in the stock market and federal funding were not enough to make much progress on Chicago's pension debt, which is greater than that of 45 states. Given the general downturn in the market in 2022, the city will be forced to raise taxes and find other quick-cash solutions to fund its pensions and protect them from insolvency. Still, the only sustainable solution is structural reform, which can only be accomplished with a constitutional amendment.
4) $300,000 luxury container homes are coming to South Side this winter. A team of investors has joined forces to bring luxury, energy-efficient container homes to the South Side—and neighbors could move in as early as this winter. Each of the 12 homes will feature 1,200-1,800 square feet of living space, two stories and 3 to 4 bedrooms. They will also include full appliances, a balcony, covered patio and car garages. Vincennes Village will be located at 7231 S. Vincennes Ave.
5) Chicago police investigating racist, homophobic posts by someone claiming to be a cop. Chicago police have launched an internal investigation into a series of posts by a person claiming to be an officer in an online forum regarded as one of the darkest corners of the web. Many of the posts on 4chan's /pol/ board are racist and homophobic. They include photos of Chicago police uniforms, a city-issued ID badge and a gun — all covered by post-it notes with the forum's name and a date written on them.
