Chicago-Area Weather: Storms, Hail, 20-Degree Temperature Drop

A couple rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected through Thursday morning for the Chicago area.

The Chicago area could see storms sweep through Wednesday with hail and strong winds possible.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to first move across the area late Wednesday morning and continue into mid-afternoon. There is a slight chance that one or two of these storms could produce quarter-sized hail, according to the National Weather Service.

More storms are possible south of the Chicago area later this afternoon and could bring a risk again for large hail and damaging winds. Then, later this evening, there will be a chance again for thunderstorms north of Interstate 80. These storms could bring, again, quarter-sized hail.

Along with the storms will come a steep drop in temperatures. After temperatures started off in the 60s for most areas north of I-80 on Wednesday morning, those temps will drop dramatically into the 40s by early evening, according to the National Weather Service. Those temps will climb back into the muggy 60s by sunrise on Thursday.

There is a chance again for thunderstorms early Thursday morning. The increased rainfall could lead to minor flooding along some rivers in the Chicago area, the National Weather Service reports.
