Top 5 stories in Chicago:

1) Chicago sees massive flooding after torrential rain storm. A torrential rainstorm yesterday morning inundated streets, caused cars to stall and water pipes to burst across the city, leaving hundreds of Chicagoans with flooded basements and entire blocks under water. Residents reported up to 6 inches of water in their basements and impassable intersections on the North Side, including Lincoln Square, Albany Park, Portage Park, Uptown, Edgewater and Ravenswood. Videos and photos circulating on social media showed cars stalling under at least 2 feet of water beneath the Metra line at Ravenswood and Lawrence avenues, standing water at the Kennedy Expressway exit at Kostner Avenue, massive flooding on Western Avenue between Montrose and Lawrence and burst water pipes spewing like geysers at the intersections of Argyle Street and Wolcott Avenue in Lincoln Square, as well as at Montrose Avenue and Harding Avenue in Old Irving Park.

2) Illinois' income and property tax rebates will be issued starting today. Many Illinois residents struggling with surging costs brought on by inflation will receive long-awaited relief in the form of new income and property tax rebates. Under Gov. J.B. Pritzker's Illinois Family Relief Plan, which was approved in April, one-time individual income tax and property tax rebates will be issued to those who meet certain criteria. Not everyone will receive their checks right away. Distribution will take roughly eight weeks. The income tax rebate calls for a single person to receive $50, while those who file taxes jointly are poised to receive a total of $100. Residents with dependents will receive a rebate of up to $300 — $100 per dependent, with a maximum of three. Income limits of $200,000 per individual taxpayer, or $400,000 for joint filers, will be attached to the checks. To qualify, you must have been an Illinois resident in 2021 and meet the income criteria. Those who filled out the 2021 IL-1040 tax form will receive their rebates automatically.

3) Chicago named America's best 'beer town' to visit, according to new index. Beer enthusiasts across the world are likely familiar with the concept of a "beercation," or an excursion planned with the intention of visiting local breweries or taprooms. Interest in "beercations" has become so prevalent that Travelocity debuted a "Beer Tourism Index" in 2019 after a survey. Recognizing the growing trend, the analysts at HomeToGo—a vacation rental platform— sought to determine America's best "beer towns" using a "Beer Lovers Index" based on the number of brewpubs, breweries and top-rated bars, average prices of beer and the median cost of nightly accommodations for travelers hoping to spend a few nights in the city. Topping HomeToGo's rankings is Chicago, a city which scored high for its abundance of breweries and well-reviewed bars, as well as the affordability of pints and overnight stays.

4) Bears rally in second half for season-opening win over 49ers. The Chicago Bears erased a 10-point third-quarter deficit by scoring 19 unanswered points to beat the San Francisco 49ers 19-10 in the season opener yesterday at Soldier Field. After a sluggish start, quarterback Justin Fields threw a pair touchdown passes in the second half to Dante Pettis and Equanimeous St. Brown, and a fourth-quarter interception by safety Eddie Jackson set up a Khalil Herbert rushing touchdown. Coach Matt Eberflus earned his first win as an NFL head coach and expressed his excitement about starting 1-0.

5) Where and when you can see stunning 'Chicagohenge' sunsets this month. Chicagoans have one more chance this year to soak in picture-perfect views of the sun aligning perfectly with the Chicago street grid, in a bi-annual event known as "Chicagohenge." As described by Adler Planetarium experts, Chicagohenge marks the point when the sunrise or sunset occurs almost precisely between buildings on the city's east- and west-facing streets. Views are best visible just after sunrise and just before sunset, with the sun most closely aligning with the city grid between Sept. 21 - 23. Popular downtown spots for the phenomenon include intersections between Kinzie and Madison Streets, with views looking down Randolph Street north of Millennium Park, specifically recommended for September. While the downtown locations offer the most contrast between buildings and the sun, Adler experts said just about any intersection in the city will do.
