📰 Top 5 stories in Chicago:
1) Earn-as-you-learn job training to launch on West Side. Jump Hire is launching a new training and job-placement program in East Garfield Park, with the goal of connecting West and South side residents to jobs stocking medical supply warehouses, hospitals or tracking inventories for Rush Health. Participants will receive training, a minimum $150 weekly stipend and a guaranteed interview for a job that offers benefits and opportunities for advancement. About 25 people are expected to participate and applications are still being accepted.
2) Former Peterson lawyer takes aim at alderman's seat, Lightfoot. Joel Brodsky, the former attorney who famously defended convicted killer Drew Peterson, is seeking the seat being vacated by longtime Lakeview Ald. Tom Tunney (44th). Brodsky said in an interview with Patch that Chicago's gang and gun violence problems have taken a toll on a once-great city. And while the city's issues are no secret, Brodsky blames Lightfoot and others for driving the city into the gutter. He said enough aldermen have not stood up to the mayor and that as a proclaimed "loudmouth," he may be just the right person to do that.
3) Chicago Hope Academy aims for historic state championship. The small Christian school on Chicago's west side was founded only 17 years ago, but hopes to win the city's first Class 1A state title in 43 years and become the first West Side program to capture a state football title at any level. "On its surface, it's all about football. But when you get involved in our program you realize this has nothing to do with football," coach Chris Mallette said. "Our greatest leadership moments happen off the field, in the classroom or social settings when guys are taking care of each other the way brothers should." The journey to the championship begins tonight when they host Chicago Corliss in the first round of the 1A State Playoffs.
4) Kanye West mural in West Loop painted over amid backlash over antisemitic remarks. An image of Ye, most known as Kanye West, on a mural in Fulton Market has been painted black in response to the rap star's recent antisemitic and bigoted comments. The 14-ft. mural was originally created by Chicago-based artist Jason Peterson, and is located on the side of a building near the intersection of Morgan and Lake Streets in the West Loop. Peterson posted to his Instagram story on Wednesday a photo of the repainted mural and a caption saying, "We need better role models." West was born in Georgia but spent much of his youth in Chicago, where he honed his musical skills.
5) Skeleton pirate ship crashes into Old Irving Park lawn, lights up block for Halloween. Halloween decorations loosely inspired by "The Pirates of the Caribbean" have taken over David Kelly's front yard in the 3700 block of North Kildare Avenue in Old Irving Park. Red and purple lights illuminate a 10-member "skeleton" crew fighting a kraken attacking their ship. Visitors to the elaborate display can expect cannon blasts — cryoblasts that shoot gusts of carbon dioxide in the air — and candy. The ship is the fourth Halloween display Kelly and his wife have orchestrated. Kelly owns an event production company called Frost, which makes access to props, lighting and equipment relatively easy.
