📰 Top 5 stories in Chicago:
1) Chicago hospital earns 'F' grade, seven others in Illinois get 'D' in new safety report. The latest rankings from the Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit watchdog, analyzed almost 3,000 general hospitals in the U.S. using more than 30 measures of patient safety from the federal government, a survey and other sources. Measures include falls, hand hygiene and death rates among surgical patients with treatable conditions. One Illinois hospital, South Shore Hospital on the city's South Side, received an F.
2) Board game centered around Chicago rats to launch in Logan Square. Designed by Chicago-based Transit Tees, the "Target: Rats" board game will launch tomorrow during a free event at Emporium in Logan Square. It will also be available online for $45. The board game embraces Chicago's status as rattiest city in the county by having players build nests, multiply their rat family by searching for Chicago-style hot dogs, Italian beef sandwiches, tamales and other food left in the dumpster, and be crowned Da Big Cheese.
3) Family sues Navy Pier after son severely injured in climbing wall fall. The parents of an 8-year-old boy are suing Chicago's Navy Pier after he fell 24 feet from a climbing wall this summer and suffered severe bodily injuries. In a lawsuit filed Tuesday, Erin and Gideon Brewer say Navy Pier didn't follow safety protocols, leading to their son's fall. The suit also claims there wasn't a safety net in place, and that the attendant put a harness on him but did not properly attach the safety rope. "It was 100 percent preventable. This was, it was horrible, and I would hate for somebody else to go through this, and I would like to see changes made," Erin Brewer said.
4) Music festivals now require Park District Board approval but skeptics worry city will choose 'profit over people.' Private music festivals in public areas have long frustrated local residents, but Park District officials have pledged to give them a say in what happens in neighborhood parks. The Board voted unanimously yesterday to overhaul agency permitting for large events so communities have the opportunity to weigh in. Some worry the need for revenue will lead the Park District Board to vote to keep festivals even when there is opposition.
5) Metra holiday train to embark for 'North Pole' at Millennium Station next month. For three Saturdays in December, a festive Metra Electric Line train will run from south suburban University Park to Millennium Station. Riders can expect visits from Santa, Mrs. Claus or elves, and goody bags for kids. Santa will also be at Millennium Station, which will be decorated as a "North Pole winter wonderland" and will feature holiday music and themed activities. This is the first time since 2008 Metra has decorated trains for the holiday season.
