📰 Top 5 stories in Chicago:
1) Chicago's Hideout to reopen in January after 'intense' internal review. The popular bar and music venue will launch a new chapter Jan. 10 after closing in the fall following complaints by a former employee. Owners Mike and Jim Hinchsliff and Tim and Katie Tuten said the process of reviewing their business practices has been intense and emotional. (Chicago Patch)
2. Chicago's new climate infrastructure fund aims to kick-start climate action among nonprofits, small businesses. The city announced on Tuesday the establishment of a $5 million Climate Infrastructure Fund that will award grants ranging from $50,000 to $250,000. Funding is available in three project categories: renewable and energy efficiency systems for existing buildings, electric vehicles and charging infrastructure, and green infrastructure. (WTTW)
3. Chicago attractions announce closures ahead of 'once in a generation' winter storm. The National Weather Service has placed the entire Chicago area under a winter storm warning, prompting city attractions, such as the Christkindlmarket, Adler Planetarium, Winterland at Gallagher Way and the Lincoln Park Zoo to close to the public the next few days. (NBC Chicago)
4. Carnegie Hero Award goes to South Sider who saved man on CTA's third rail. In June, Anthony Perry, 20, of Greater Grand Crossing, saved a man who had been knocked off a 69th Street Red Line platform during a fight and fell unconscious onto the third rail. Perry said he plans to use the $5,000 award money for auto repairs and clothes for his family. (Chicago Sun-Times)
5. City's move to make police scanners private 'makes everyone's job harder,' violence prevention groups say. Local police scanners have long been accessible to the public, but in a move to keep first responders safe, safeguard sensitive information and align with practices in other cities, Chicago quietly began plans earlier this year to revoke that access. With radio transmissions set to be fully encrypted by early 2023, violence prevention outreach workers and others who rely on scanners to do their jobs have voiced serious concerns.
