Concert Review: Train Delivers an Electrifying Night at Ravinia Under the Stars

With surprise performances and nonstop energy, Train and opener Edwin McCain lit up a perfect summer evening in Highland Park.

There are few better ways to spend a summer night than under the stars at Ravinia, and last night’s sold-out concert featuring Train with special guest Edwin McCain was a perfect reminder of why this venue is so beloved. With clear skies, a light breeze, and thousands of fans spread across the lawn and pavilion, the atmosphere was electric before the first note was even played.

Edwin McCain Warms the Stage with Heart

Singer-songwriter Edwin McCain opened the night with a soulful, heartfelt set that immediately connected with the crowd. The band rolled through fan favorites like “Walk With You,” “I Could Not Ask for More,” and of course, their iconic hit “I’ll Be,” which had the audience swaying and singing along. It was an emotional and nostalgic opener that set the tone beautifully for the main act.

Train Delivers Hits, Humor, and Heart

When Train hit the stage, the energy shifted into high gear. From the first song, the band sounded tight, polished, and full of life—led, as always, by charismatic frontman Pat Monahan, whose voice remains as smooth and soulful as ever.

One of the night’s early highlights came during “Calling All Angels,” when Pat delighted fans by taking selfies with audience members mid-song. It was a moment of warmth and spontaneity that reminded everyone why Train concerts feel so personal and connected.

“Meet Virginia” brought a fun and chaotic moment as Pat tossed Train T-shirts into the crowd. Fans scrambled to catch them while dancing and singing along—fully immersed in the joy of the night.

Later in the set, the crowd roared with surprise and excitement when Rock Richard Monahan (Pat’s son) took the mic to deliver a blistering rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “Over the Hills and Far Away.” His vocal chops and stage presence stunned even longtime fans, and the performance quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the evening.

Dancing, Singing, and Smiles All Around

From front-row fans to lawn-goers camped out on picnic blankets, the entire crowd was on their feet for much of the show. Songs like “Hey, Soul Sister,” “Drive By,” and the anthemic “Drops of Jupiter” had everyone dancing, belting out lyrics, and waving their hands in the air. Ravinia’s acoustics and atmosphere added to the magic, allowing every note and harmony to drift perfectly across the grounds.

A Night to Remember

Train’s performance at Ravinia wasn’t just a concert—it was an experience. With powerful vocals, playful crowd interaction, unexpected covers, and a setting as scenic as any in the country, it was the kind of night that sticks with you. For fans old and new, this show was a reminder of why live music matters: connection, celebration, and a whole lot of fun.

Train made the most of a perfect summer evening—and left Highland Park with hearts full and voices hoarse.
