1) 242 cars towed on first night of winter parking ban, highest number since 2019. The city's Department of Streets and Sanitation reports 242 cars were towed yesterday as Chicago's winter overnight parking ban went into effect. Violators face a minimum $150 towing fee, $60 ticket and a storage fee of $25 per day their vehicle remains at the auto pound. The ban is enforced even if there is no snow.
2) Chicago Public Schools teacher fatally shot while driving on city's South Side. Quentine Carradine, 49, was traveling westbound in a car near the 400 block of East 87th Street at about 4:07 p.m. Monday when he was shot in the head by an unknown individual. He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition and was later pronounced dead. He was a special education teacher and basketball coach at New Sullivan Elementary.
3) Cook County property taxes increase, hits Chicago's Hispanic wards hardest. Most Cook County property owners will see a larger tax bill this year, but owners in gentrifying Hispanic neighborhoods will see some of the biggest hikes. Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas said several factors are driving the hikes: tax increment financing districts, rising property assessments and a new state law that allows local governments to recoup losses from reassessed property taxes.
4) Annual King Drive holiday event expands to bring Chatham cheer to rest of city. With the help of volunteers and members of his nonprofit My Block, My Hood, My City, Jahmal Cole, 39, began decorating along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in 2018. Now in its fifth year, the "Be A Part Of The Light" holiday event has grown five times over, with about 300 homeowners participating along King Drive and another 200 elsewhere on the South and West sides. "Every neighborhood deserves to sparkle like Michigan Avenue," Cole said.
5) Chicago basketball tournament for top high school teams returns. Top high school basketball teams will be facing off this weekend at the 11th Annual Chicago Elite Classic Basketball Tournament. The event showcases nationally ranked teams from across the country, and runs through Sunday at the Credit Union 1 Arena. "The Chicago Elite Classic is something we started to showcase our young people," said Coach Tyrone Slaughter of Whitney Young. This year, there's a new "She Got Great" Women's Tournament.
