CPD Highlights Its Female Officers During National Women's Month

Female police officers in Chicago's 11th District talk about the job in a "Women in Law Enforcement" video.

CHICAGO, IL - The Chicago Police Department has highlighted some of its female officers for National Women's History Month. The department released a video as part of its CPD Video Series showing five female officers talking about the challenges of being a police officer in Chicago and inspiring young girls who may be interested in the same career path.

"One of the The first policewomen in the United States was Marie Owens, who joined the Chicago Police department in 1891," the CPD wrote in introducing the video on YouTube. "Since then, women have made great progress in the world of law enforcement."

Officers featured in a video from the 11th District on Monday ranged in experience from 18 months to 17 years on the job.

"Little girls need to see female police officers and women in good jobs and good spots so they can aspire to be someone they've seen," said Officer Santiago, who has 14 years of experience on the force.

The video featuring the 11th District officers is the only one on this topic the department has released as of now. Watch the video below.
