1) Chicago's winter overnight parking ban begins Dec. 1. The regulation impacts 107 miles-worth of streets across the city, and will remain in effect until April 1, 2023. In an effort to prevent build-up of snow and ice, vehicles in banned areas between 3 a.m. to 7 a.m. will be towed. The parking ban will be enforced, regardless of whether there is snow on the ground.
2) With Field Museum popup Ketapanen Kitchen, groundbreaking indigenous chef works to preserve Native culture. Chef Walks First, also known as Jessica Pāēmonēkot plans to turn her popular Field Museum pop-up, Ketapanen Kitchen, into a food truck or permanent restaurant. The pop-up is part of Native American and Indigenous Heritage Month at the museum. Pāēmonēkot is Chicago's first Native American executive chef.
3) Indicted Ald. Ed Burke will not seek reelection. With a federal corruption trial looming, Ald. Edward Burke (14th) has chosen not to seek reelection, ending the reign of Chicago's longest-serving City Council member. Burke did not file nominating petitions by yesterday's deadline for candidates hoping to run in the February municipal election, and provided no immediate comment about his decision.
4) Whistleblower trial begins in alleged CPD cover-up in shooting of unarmed teen with autism. Testimony begins today in a lawsuit alleging Chicago Police Department leadership demoted detective Isaac Lambert after he refused to clear fellow officer Khalid Muhammad in the 2017 shooting of 18-year-old Ricardo Hayes. Lambert claims he resisted pressure from superiors to list Muhammad as the "victim" of an assault by Hayes, whom Muhammad shot twice.
5) This Chicago hotel has transformed its presidential suite into Santa's urban oasis. The Swissotel Chicago's newly renovated Santa Suite is ready for visitors. For nine consecutive years, the hotel has transformed its 2,000-square-foot presidential suite into Santa's holiday pad. Whether spending the day or night, ticket holders can tour the suite, get photos with Santa, indulge in sweets and make holiday crafts. New to the suite this year are whimsical Chicago-themed Christmas trees.
