📰 Top 5 stories in Chicago:
1) Chicago's four-year high school graduation rate hits record high. Chicago Public Schools' four-year graduation rate was 82.9 percent last year, up from 80.2 percent the year prior. The rate is the district's highest in at least a decade. The announcement came amid the release of state and national test scores that indicated a decline in math and reading proficiency among Chicago students. CPS leaders also said about 89 percent of last year's freshmen were on track to graduate on time.
2) USPS letter carrier robbed of postal truck after attempted sexual assault. A man allegedly tried to sexually assault a 28-year-old USPS mail carrier before stealing her postal truck Saturday morning in the 2800 block of South Pulaski Road in the Little Village Neighborhood. The postal worker was getting into the vehicle at 9:15 a.m. when she found a man hiding inside. After a struggle, she managed to escape the vehicle before the man drove off. Police released a photo of the suspect moments before the attack. USPIS is calling the suspect "armed and dangerous," and is offering a $5o,000 reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction.
3) Inside the diversifying world of Chicago's natural wine scene. Chicago's new generation of wine lovers is young, less white and willing to reject the high-mindedness of fine dining for an approach that favors community and storytelling. The approach has permeated Chicago's natural wine scene, which includes wine made in traditional or simplified methods, and may exclude the use of certain additives. An increasing number of wine drinkers in Chicago see it as a tool to introduce wine to a younger, more diverse audience.
4) Chicago officials are pitching city's first comprehensive plan in 60 years. City planners set a goal of getting 10,000 people to provide feedback on the "We Will Chicago" draft plan before public comment ends Nov. 1. The document is the first citywide plan to encourage equitable neighborhood and city growth since the 1966 Comprehensive Plan. It is also the result of more direct input from residents than any other plan of its kind. It will guide budget and policy priorities around eight pillars: economic development; arts and culture; the environment, climate and energy; housing and neighborhoods, lifelong education, public health and safety, transportation and infrastructure; and civic and community engagement.
5) 'The Golden Girls' kitchen to hit Chicago. Here's a peek at the pop-up's menu. "The Golden Girls" pop-up restaurant has plans to open in spring 2023 in a "secret location" in Chicago, bringing iconic sitcom staples to an actual table. The immersive experience will pay homage to the famed Miami spots where characters Blanche, Rose, Dorothy and Sophia gathered throughout the show's seven seasons. Reservations will start at $49 for a 90-minute visit.
