Gunshot Victim At White Sox Game Is a CPS Teacher, District Confirms

The district did not specify which of the two women injured teaches at CPS but an attorney says his client did not bring a gun to the game.

CHICAGO — One of the women injured after she was hit by a bullet at a Chicago White Sox game is a teacher with Chicago Public Schools, the district confirmed on Wednesday.

In a statement issued to Patch on Wednesday, CPS said that a district teacher was injured while at the White Sox game. The district did not specify which of the two women injured in the incident teaches at CPS.

Police said that a 42-year-old woman and a 26-year-old woman were injured in the incident, which took place in the fourth inning of the White Sox-Oakland Athletics game on Friday at Guaranteed Rate Field. One woman was taken to a local hospital after being struck in the leg by a bullet while the other was grazed in the abdomen, police said.

Police have not released further details about the incident, but interim Chicago Police Superintendent Fred Waller told reporters on Monday that police have all but ruled out that the gunshot came from outside the ballpark.

On Tuesday, an ESPN Chicago radio report indicated that one of the women injured brought the gun involved in the shooting into the ballpark without setting off the metal detectors at the gates. However, the attorney for the woman said that his client underwent emergency treatment for a gunshot wound but did not bring a gun into the ballpark.

The attorney is a season ticket holder, the attorney said, and ABC 7, citing sources, that the woman has a FOID card.

“She denies bringing a firearm into the stadium and further denies having anything to do with the discharge of a firearm at the stadium. We have reviewed photographic evidence and x-rays of our client's injuries with firearms and medical experts who confirm the gunshot wound our client sustained was not self-inflicted and was not the result of her accidentally discharging a firearm,” the statement says, according to ABC 7. “We will continue investigating this matter further to pursue justice on behalf of our client who sustained serious personal injuries as a result of this shooting."

ABC 7 reported that both women involved in the shooting are CPS teachers at Graham Elementaryand were at the ballpark celebrating the end of the first week of classes with 30 colleagues.

However, the CPS statement indicated only one of the women teaches at CPS, adding, “On behalf of the entire CPS community, we wish our staff member a speedy recovery.”

Chicago Police have not issued any new information since Waller and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson spoke briefly at a news conference on Monday. Johnson said that when more information becomes available, it will be released.
