1) An unconventional Illinois hot dog makes a 'best in U.S.' list. The Hot Dog Box's Bronzeville Bourbon Hot Dog landed a spot on TastingTable's list of "13 Best Hot Dogs in America." The meal, created by the father-daughter duo who run the place, consists of a steak dog with bourbon barbecue sauce, hickory-smoked bacon, and a cabbage and carrot medley loaded inside of a pretzel bun.

2) R. Kelly wants to ban jurors from Chicago trial who've seen "Surviving R. Kelly" doc. R. Kelly, 55, reportedly wants jurors who've seen the Lifetime docuseries Surviving R. Kelly to be banned from his second federal trial, which takes place this week in Chicago. The 2019 series opened the floodgates into the investigation that landed the embattled R&B singer behind bars. He faces charges of child pornography and obstruction of justice.

3) The race for Chicago mayor is heating up with a lot of new faces. Candidates are announcing their campaigns to run against incumbent Mayor Lori Lightfoot for the April 2023 mayoral election in Chicago. So far, nine candidates have announced they will run for election, looking to replace Lightfoot who has been in office since 2019, including State Rep. Kam Buckner and Chicago activist Ja'Mal Green. Two very familiar faces are running, too — Paul Vallas and Willie Wilson.

4) Andrew Bird announces return of Gezelligheid concerts in Chicago. For the first time in three years, musician Andrew Bird announced the in-person return of his annual Gezelligheid concerts held at Chicago's Fourth Presbyterian Church. The series of holiday shows—a tradition the Illinois native first began in 2009—will be held Dec. 12 - 16. go on sale at 10am CT this Friday, August 19th, with pre-sales beginning at 10am CT today.

5) Some Illinois school districts face bus driver shortage as first day of school nears. The school bus driver shortage that was prevalent during the COVID-19 pandemic is still affecting some Illinois school districts with higher costs covered by taxpayers. From Chicago to Metropolis, the shortage is forcing school districts and parents to make alternative plans. Chicago schools are offering monthly stipends to cover transportation costs.
