📰 Top 5 stories in Chicago:
1) Father Michael Pfleger removed from St. Sabina as another child sex abuse allegation investigated. Father Micahel Pfleger has been asked to step down from his position as senior pastor at St. Sabina Catholic Church following a new allegation that he sexually abused a minor in the parish rectory in the late 1980s. At the time, the accuser was a member of the Soul Children of Chicago choir, which rehearsed at St. Sabina a couple times a week. Pfleger was investigated for similar allegations and ultimately cleared by the archdiocese in 2021. He maintains his innocence in the latest allegation.
2) With flurries possible today, here's when Chicago typically sees first snow. Chicago could potentially see its first snowflakes of the season today. The area will see a storm system roll through, with scattered showers expected throughout the region. Coupled with well-below average temperatures struggling to reach 40 degrees, some snowflakes could fall. How does that compare to historical averages? The average date the city sees its first traces of snow typically falls around Oct. 31. If snow is detected today, it will mean Chicago is two weeks ahead of "schedule" for first snowfall.
3) A Chicago love story interrupted ends in a wedding 43 years later. Stephen Watts, 72, and Jeanne Gustavson, 69, were married Saturday in Gustavson's back yard—43 years after she broke off a relationship that began in 1971 when they were both students at Loyola University Chicago. She fell madly in love with the tall "hunk" who was president of the college German Club. The problem was, he was African American and she was white, and Gustavson's family didn't approve ...
4) Jewel shoppers on South Side wonder what Mariano's merger will mean for them. Mariano's parent company Kroger has agreed to buy Jewel owner Albertson's in a deal estimated at more than $20 billion. Critics of the grocery store merger are concerned it will squeeze consumers in Black and brown neighborhoods. Some analysts say the new company could possibly help slow food price inflation by using its power to reject food producer price increases. Meanwhile, critics of the deal remained concerned the merger will squeeze consumers in underserved communities already struggling to afford food. "Sometimes when you see these larger mergers with corporations, communities like Englewood, Woodlawn, other Black communities, usually suffer," said Asiaha Butler, CEO of the Resident Association of Greater Englewood.
5) Indie rock immortalized through feature film dedicated to Chicago DIY music scene. "Local Band," a feature film by Chicago filmmaker Dan Stewart, is about a fictional indie band that still gives it their all despite feeling doomed to fall through the cracks. The film was shot in July and August of this year. Scenes were filmed in some of the same practice spaces and venues used by bands across the city. The use of real locations and bands was meant to give the film an unmistakable sense of place within Chicago. Stewart plans to submit the film for festival consideration when postproduction is complete.
