The Joffrey Ballet begins new season with Jane Eyre adaptation
Joffrey Ballet performing Jane Eyre at The Auditorium Theatre through October 27, 2019
The Joffrey Ballet has opened its 2019-20 season with the Chicago premiere of choreographer Cathy Marston’s adaption of the classic novel Jane Eyre.
On opening night, the title role of Jane was performed by Amanda Assucena with Greig Matthews as Edward Rochester. Both dancers brought forth a sensitive interpretation of their roles. Victoria Jaiani and Anais Bueno will also perform the part of Jane, and Fabrice Calmels and Dylan Gutierrez will alternate with Mr. Matthews in the role of Mr. Rochester.
If you haven’t read Jane Eyre, do yourself a favor and read the synopsis of the story before seeing the ballet, because, without any knowledge of the story, you will likely be confused about the events unfolding onstage.

The music, composed by Philip Feeney, and performed by the Chicago Philharmonic under the direction of Music Director & Conductor Scott Peck, was one of the highlights of the evening. It beautifully mirrors the story of Jane’s turbulent life.
A stand-out performance came from Christine Rocas dancing the role of Bertha Mason, the wife of Edward Rochester. An insane woman who has been locked away in a secret area of the Rochester residence for many years, she breaks out, determined to prevent Jane and Mr. Rochester from ever being together. Ms. Rocas brings out the intense energy inherent in such a character, and her performance is riveting.
