The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Chicago.

(Patch Media)

Good morning! I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. In today's Chicago Daily:

  • 🚫 A Lincoln statue in an Edgewater park has been defaced with graffiti
  • 🍽️ Marillac St. Vincent asks for help feeding Chicago families
  • 🕒 River North restaurants cut hours more than anywhere else in the U.S.

The weather:

Partly sunny. High: 47 Low: 39.

Top 5 stories in Chicago:

1) Abraham Lincoln statue in Edgewater defaced with anti-colonizer graffiti. For the second time in less than two months, a statue of Abraham Lincoln was vandalized by anti-colonizer activists. This time, it was in Senn Park. Last month, it was in Lincoln Park. The vandals used red paint to deface the statue and pedestal, referencing the "Dakota 38"—38 Native Americans hanged in 1862 over a land dispute in what is now Minnesota. President Lincoln approved those death sentences.

ABC 7

2) Giving Tuesday: Marillac St. Vincent asks for help to feed Chicago families. Marillac St. Vincent operates food pantries in East Garfield Park and Lincoln Park. Director of Community Outreach Programs Tramaine Martin said the need for food assistance has risen. "Over the past year, we've seen over a 22% increase," Martin said. "We've gone from serving maybe a 100 to 200 per distribution. We're seeing bigger families." Their goal is to raise $10,000, as an anonymous donor has promised a 100 percent match.

FOX 32

3) River North restaurants cut hours more than any area in US during COVID. On average, restaurants in River North cut 20.2 operating hours per week during the COVID-19 pandemic. That's more than restaurants in any other part of the country. Some restaurants have stopped serving lunch, others are now closed several days a week to remain profitable. Restaurant owners cite inflation, lack of workers and changing consumer habits—the biggest being a sluggish return to workers downtown.

Chicago Sun-Times

4) Chicago area student athletes donate 1000 sweatshirts to highlight teens without homes. More than a dozen high school soccer players from the Chicago area donated 1,000 sweatshirts yesterday to Lincoln Park Community Services. They collected the donations through a charity event organized by Buddy's Helpers. The students wanted the donation to highlight teen homelessness, which affected about 40,000 Illinois students last school year.

5) Illinoisans have less than one week to renew their driver's license, ID card. The final deadline for Illinois residents to renew their driver's license or ID card is Dec. 1, marking the end of the final deadline extension. The upcoming deadline applies to driver's licenses, ID cards and permits, but it does not apply to commercial driver's licenses or CDL learner's permits. The Secretary of State encourages people to complete the renewal process online, though drivers have the option of visiting a facility instead.
