🌱 Man Arrested In CTA Attack + Chicago To Forgo Property Tax Increase

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Chicago.

(Patch Media)

Good morning! Thanks for checking out today's Chicago Daily. In today's guide to local stories:

  • Chicago will forgo property tax increase for one year
  • Man arrested in brutal Red Line bottle attack
  • Rogers Park tent city residents served fake eviction notices

The weather:

Plenty of sunshine. High: 67 Low: 54.

Top 5 stories in Chicago:

1) Rogers Park tent city residents served fake eviction notices promising to move them to fancy hotel. Residents of a Far North Side tent city were given fake eviction notices this week as part of an apparent stunt from a college student linked to a political gadfly challenging the incumbent aldermen. The one-page notices titled "Maria Hadden's Five Day Notice To Vacate" were stuffed into belongings and posted on signs in and around Touhy Park. They were dated Sept. 27 and listed the name of Hadden, the 49th Ward alderperson, in bold blue type over a line reading "landlord/agent." The notice says Touhy Park residents have five days to leave and clear the area of "all buildings, sheds, closets, out-buildings, garages, barns and other structures used in connection with said premises." It also says residents will be relocated for free to the Four Seasons Hotel in Gold Coast, and their would be open-ended "for as long as it takes for Maria Hadden to find you appropriate housing." The notices are completely fake, and Hadden was not involved with them in any way, she said.

2) Chicago sports radio host Laurence Holmes finds voice in comic universe. Laurence Holmes grew up connecting with comic book heroes, never imagining he would one day be the inspiration behind the character development and storyline of one. Holmes—a Roseland native who spends his days working as a mostly mild-mannered Chicago sports talk radio host on 670-AM The Score—lives in a different universe than the ones he immersed himself in growing up. But when another suburban Chicago native with ties to comics asked Holmes to collaborate on Image Comics' "Radiant Black"series, Holmes wasn't about to turn down the opportunity. Last week, Holmes got a first-hand look at the finished product of Radiant Black No. 18, which introduces the world to Wendell George, a Black man and native of Gary, Ind., who graduates from Purdue University with a degree in engineering. And like many writers who get their first glimpse at a book that bears their name, Holmes admits the fact that he actually played a part in the book's creation is still taking some getting used to.

3) Lightfoot: Chicago will forgo property tax increase tied to Consumer Price index for one year. Amid pressure from city leaders and soaring inflation, Mayor Lori Lightfoot's administration announced yesterday that Chicago will forgo a property tax increase tied to the Consumer Price Index for one year. The city's property tax was set to increase 5 percent without city action, which is the maximum property tax increase allowed by the city. The Consumer Price Index, which the tax increase is connected to, has increased by over 8 percent over the past 12 months. Lightfoot credits the city's lower budget cap than the city has seen in previous years for allowing her administration to forgo the property tax increase. According to Lightfoot's office, a $128 million budget gap is anticipated for 2023.

4) Man arrested in brutal Red Line bottle attack. Chicago police have arrested a person in connection with an attack and robbery on the CTA Red Line. A man was attacked and robbed by two people early Sunday morning a the Red Line train near 95th Street. Police said 30-year-old Solomon Washington of Chicago Heights was arrested Wednesday in connection to the robbery and attack. Washington is charged with four felony counts, including aggravated battery and armed robbery. On September 24th he allegedly hit the 44-year-old man in the head with a glass bottle, causing him to bleed. The following day, Washington also allegedly punched a 46-year-old man in the face and robbed him, according to investigators. Police are also looking for a second suspect involved in the first attack. Washington is expected to be in bond court today.

5) Chicago Teachers Union, United Working Families endorse Brandon Johnson for mayor. The Chicago Teachers Union and United Working Families are so determined to defeat Mayor Lori Lightfoot, they're endorsing a mayoral candidate who has not yet entered the race—and refusing to wait for a bigger-name challenger who won't say when he'll make up his mind. With a shared progressive agenda, both groups endorsed Cook County Commissioner and CTU organizer Brandon Johnson, who has formed an exploratory committee, but has not yet declared his candidacy. U.S. Rep. Jesus "Chuy" Garcia (D-Ill.) sent an email to the United Working Families party committee asking them to defer last weekend's mayoral endorsement, but the group refused because Garcia was unwilling to give them a timeline for his decision. Both resolutions urge Johnson to run and "constitute an endorsement" if he does.
