May 2019 Officially Wettest On Record For Chicago

CHICAGO — After a stormy Memorial Day that left roads flooded and more rain in the days that followed, it's official: May 2019 is the wettest May in Chicago history. This month's rainfall total broke the record set just last year.

As of 7 a.m. Thursday, O'Hare had seen 8.24 inches of rain, higher than the 8.21 inches seen in May 2018. Here's a look at total rainfall for May in years past, according to the National Weather Service.

  • 2019: 8.24 inches
  • 2018: 8.21 inches
  • 1945: 7.59 inches
  • 1883: 7.32 inches
  • 2011: 7.27 inches
  • 2004: 7.22 inches

Meanwhile, storm cleanup continued in communities across Illinois, and flood warnings remained in effect in counties including Lake, McHenry, Will, Kane and Kendall.

More storms were in the forecast for Thursday afternoon, with a chance of showers after 3 p.m. and a 30 percent chance of storms before 8 p.m.
