Mother's Day Forecast for Chicago Area: Temps Near 80, Rain Unlikely

CHICAGO, IL - The Chicago area has seen plenty of rain and cooler temps in recent weeks. But it looks like a much more pleasant weather pattern will take hold just in time for Mother's Day on Sunday. An overall drying trend is expected to continue into early next week.

On Thursday, a thick cloud cover is expected to linger through early afternoon across the Chicago area. Isolated rain showers are possible south of Interstate 80. High temps between 53 and 67 degrees are in the forecast with the cooler temps expected along Lake Michigan.

Friday should see partly cloudy skies and high temps between 50 and 69 degrees. Temps will begin to climb as we head into the weekend with high temps between 66 and 75 degrees on Saturday and between 67 and 78 degrees on Sunday.

There is a small chance for rains showers on Saturday.

"There is uncertainty as to how strong lake breezes will be this weekend and Monday, which would keep lakeside areas, including downtown Chicago, cooler," according to the National Weather Service.

Here is a more detailed look at the forecast for the coming days:

• THURSDAY: Cloudy through early afternoon and then some breaks of sun. Highs in the upper 50s inland...but only in the upper 40s near the lake. Northeast winds 10 to 15 mph.
• THURSDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows in the lower to mid 40s. North winds 5 to 10 mph.
• FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs in the lower 60s inland...but only in the lower 50s near the lake. Northeast winds 5 to 10 mph.
• FRIDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows in the mid 40s. North winds 5 to 10 mph in the evening shifting to the west after midnight.
• SATURDAY: Partly sunny. A 20 percent chance of showers in the afternoon. Highs in the lower 70s inland...but only in the upper 60s near the lake. West winds 5 to 10 mph.
• SATURDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy in the evening then clearing. Lows in the lower 50s.
• SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs in the mid 70s inland...but only in the upper 60s near the lake.
• SUNDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear in the evening then becoming partly cloudy. Lows in the mid 50s.
• MONDAY AND MONDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Highs in the mid 70s inland...but only in the lower 70s near the lake. Lows in the mid 50s.
