Top stories in Chicago:
1) When Queen Elizabeth II came to Chicago: A look at the 1959 visit from Her Majesty. On July 6, 1959, as part of a larger 45-day trip through the Canadian provinces and four of the five Great Lakes, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip made a brief 14-hour visit to Chicago, the first visit by a reigning British monarch to the city. The royal couple arrived in the city via Lake Michigan, docking their small boat to a jetty named Queen's Landing, just east of Buckingham Fountain. The Queen and her husband visited several Chicago landmarks that summer day, including Navy Pier, The Art Institute of Chicago and The Museum of Science and Industry, where the Queen saw herself on color television for the first time in an exhibit.
2) Connecticut Sun ousts defending champ Chicago Sky in game 5 to reach WNBA finals. No WNBA team has repeated as champion since the Los Angeles Sparks did it in 2001-02, and the No. 3 seed Connecticut Sun ensured last night the streak would be extended, knocking off the No. 2 seed and defending champion Chicago Sky with a 72-63 victory in a winner-take-all semifinal Game 5 at Wintrust Arena. The Sky controlled most of the game, outscoring the Sun by 18 across the second and third quarters, holding Connecticut to just eight points in the third and leading by as many as 11 with 7:20 left in the game. But the Sun roared back, closing the game on an 18-0 run to shock the Sky and the crowd. Chicago went scoreless for the final 4:46 of the game.

3) Bears' 'multi-billion-dollar' Arlington Park plan could take 10 years. The Chicago Bears on Thursday unveiled plans for the potential development of the former Arlington Park Racecourse for what would be part of an expansive arts and entertainment district in Arlington Heights that will be headlined by a new home for Chicago's National Football League franchise. However, the Bears did not give specifics of what a new state-of-the-art enclosed stadium would look like or how much it will cost. Officials said those details would not come until after they close on the former racecourse property, if that happens. But team brass emphasized that much work has to be completed before many of the specifics emerge.
4) Mayor Lori Lightfoot creates community advisory council to ensure neighborhood input on Chicago casino. Mayor Lori Lightfoot, with the support of Ald. Walter Burnett, Jr. (27th) and casino operator Bally's, yesterday announced the formation of a Casino Community Advisory Council that will serve as a channel for community input as the city moves forward with the first Chicago casino. The proposed Casino CAC includes residents, and community groups from surrounding neighborhoods, as well as experts on a range of related topics. Management and oversight of the CAC will be jointly shared by the Department of Planning and Development, the Mayor's Office of Community Engagement, the Department of Transportation, and the CFO's office. Casino CAC will also consider issues related to the operation of the temporary site as they are applicable to the future permanent casino project. The Casino CAC will remain intact until the opening of the casino.
5) City Council committee endorses ordinance to protect abortion rights. Illinois is an oasis of freedom surrounded by states that have enacted what activists call "extreme anti-abortion" and anti-gender affirming laws in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade. Chicago alderpersons yesterday took a giant step toward ensuring out-of-staters arriving in the city seeking care unavailable in their home states are not further victimized. The Committee on Health and Human Relations approved an ordinance championed by Ald. Rossana Rodriguez Sanchez (33rd) that would prohibit the Chicago Police Department or any other agency of local government from cooperating in investigations that seek to criminalize women who come to Chicago seeking abortions and other reproductive care. It would also shield medical providers who treat those patients and those who help, such as by providing information, transportation and housing. If the full City Council approves the ordinance, that executive order would be replaced by the force of law.
