Top 5 stories in Chicago:

1) R. Kelly guilty of child pornography, enticing minors for sex. A jury on Wednesday found musician R. Kelly guilty on three criminal counts of producing child pornography and three counts of sexual crimes against children, which brought to a close an almost month-long trial involving the former R & B musician. The verdict came on the second day of jury deliberations and after the jury delivered several questions to the judge during their 11 hours of deliberations. Two of Kelly's associates were found not guilty of the charges they faced in the matter. Kelly, 55, faced a total of 13 criminal charges. He was found not guilty of conspiracy to obstruct justice and tampering with evidence during his 2008 trial on criminal pornography as part of the "mixed verdict," which was announced just before 4:30 p.m. on yesterday. The Chicago native was previously found guilty of similar criminal charges in New York and faces 30 years in prison.

2) Vice President Kamala Harris to participate in roundtable discussion on reproductive rights in Chicago. Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to meet with Illinois state legislators and other local leaders in Chicago later this week, according to Harris' office. Harris' visit is slated for Friday, Sept. 16, when her focus on reproductive rights mirrors the mission of a trip to the Chicago area early this summer. Harris made stops in Chicago and Plainfield on June 24, addressing the recent overturning of Roe v. Wade that has vastly changed the legal scope of reproductive rights in much of the country. In the wake of the Jackson v. Dobbs ruling, Illinois has emerged as an island for abortion access, as many nearby states immediately enacted abortion restrictions following the Supreme Court decision.

3) Garrett Popcorn creates caramel beer with Revolution Brewing. Garrett Popcorn and Revolution Brewing are now selling a beer made with caramel popcorn. Garrett, the brand known for its mix of cheddar and caramel kernels, is partnering with the state's best-selling craft beer brand to produce CaramelCrisp Caramel Popcorn Ale. The brown ale hit Chicago shelves yesterday with a statewide release slated for Saturday, Oct. 1. According to a brewery spokesperson, Revolution Brewing will use 450 pounds of caramel popcorn and 1,200 pounds of brown sugar for every 120 barrels of the 7 percent ABV beer. The two beloved brands are neighbors in Avondale — Garrett rents storage space (for tins and other wares) from Revolution in the building next to the brewery. The beer, which could become an annual offering, will be poured at Revolution's taproom and brewpub, and bars and stores across Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

4) McDonald's to move jobs to Chicago but voices concern on crime. McDonald's Corp. is moving its innovation center and about 100 jobs to central Chicago — a big bet on the city that comes as other high-profile companies flee the area's high taxes and crime. The world's biggest restaurant company by sales said it's relocating the workers from Romeoville, a Chicago suburb, to the company's headquarters in the city. The unit, which will be called Speedee labs, will focus on improving customer experience and solving operational problems. The company said the move shows its commitment to the city. "We are betting on Chicago in the long term because we think it makes good business sense," McDonald's Chief Executive Officer Chris Kempczinski said. The move to bring more workers to the third-largest city in the U.S. follows announced departures from Boeing Inc. and billionaire Ken Griffin's hedge fund, Citadel. Chicago's appeal has been eroded by high taxes, an indebted government and systemic segregation that has contributed to crime.

5) Gov. J.B. Pritzker issues disaster proclamation to assist migrants bused in from Texas. Gov. Pritzker is calling on the National Guard to help deal with busloads of migrants being sent to Chicago from Texas. The governor also issued a disaster proclamation to speed up the availability of state money and resources to deal with the crisis. Pritzker took the extraordinary steps yesterday to deal with the mounting crisis that is only expected to worsen. So far, 11 busloads of carrying about 509 migrants have arrived in the city from Texas, according to the city. The latest migrants arriving became the tipping point for state and local officials. Pritzker issued the disaster declaration to allow the state to cut through red tape and quickly release money to pay for hotels and medical care for the migrants. Pritzker accused Texas Gov. Greg Abbott of playing games with people's lives as part of a political stunt.
