Robert Morris University Illinois Alumnus Tommy Hughes Shines in the Boxing Ring
Former RMU linebacker finds a new avocation in boxing.

As a Robert Morris University Illinois student athlete, Chicagoan Tommy Hughes made his mark as a starting linebacker on the Eagles’ football team. The Notre Dame High School for Boys graduate completed his Bachelor of Business Administration at RMU and then went on to pursue a different goal: becoming a boxer.
Earning the nickname of “White Lightning,” Hughes has racked up 17 wins, a Chicago Golden Gloves Championship and on Friday, September 15, he will be boxing in the Rosemont Rumble in The Dome at the Ballpark, 27 Jennie Finch Way in Rosemont. The first bell is at 7 p.m.
According to his trainers, Wayne Gregory and Pat White, Tommy has “overwhelmed his opponents with his speed and punch output…he is determined to be a champion.”

Jared Williamson, Hughes’ football coach at Robert Morris, commented on his spirit and performance as a player. "It was no surprise to any of Tommy's coaches and teammates to see him quickly ascend when he entered professional boxing. He has always had a passion to compete with the work ethic and demeanor needed to succeed. We are all so proud of him and look forward to another "White Lightning" victory on the 15th."
