First, the good news.

Sunday is expected to be the last day of the oppressive heat that started on Thursday and continued through the weekend. Temps reached into the 90s for much of the Chicago area over the weekend with heat index values soaring well into the 100s.

A heat advisory remains in effect through 7 p.m. Sunday but then temperatures will drop for the start of the work week. On Monday and Tuesday, temperatures will be in the low- to mid-80s with much more tolerable humidity levels, according to the National Weather Service.

This heat wave, though, could prime the atmosphere for thunderstorms for the rest of today. A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for the Chicago suburbs for the Sunday afternoon and into tonight. The main risk with those storms will be torrential downpours, which could lead to flooding, and damaging wind gusts that could reach up to 70 mph. There is also a chance for large hail.
