Top 5 stories today in Chicago:
1) Chicago high-rise residents urged to turn off lights after 11 p.m. during bird migration season. As birds begin to migrate through Chicago on their way to winter homes, residents are being asked to do their part to help protect them. As part of the "Lights Out Chicago" campaign, residents of tall buildings are asked to turn off their lights or draw their blinds after 11 p.m. during the migration season, which runs from late August through November. The recommendations apply to all buildings of 40 or more stories and to buildings of 20 or more stories that are isolated from other buildings.
2) Street takeovers continue throughout weekend, leading to clashes with cops and arrests. Stunt drivers and spectators flooded Chicago streets for a second straight weekend night, disturbing residents, attacking cops and damaging police cars during some of the unsanctioned events that allegedly drew participants from across the country. Racers took over multiple intersections, including West Madison and South Morgan streets in the West Loop, and South Morgan Street and West Washington Boulevard. Another drifting event scheduled for Sunday night was canceled "due to major police activity," according to an announcement posted online.
3) Illinois voters may opt to vote-by-mail in all elections. Elections officials are sending applications for permanent permission to vote by mail to each of the state's 8 million registered voters. No one is obligated to sign up. As long as they remain at the same address, those who do will receive ballots that can be completed at home and mailed for all future elections. In Chicago, the nearly 40% of ballots received in the November 2020 election were mail-in, according to the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners. Chicago began sending applications last spring, so the city already has a permanent vote-by-mail list of 100,000 names, among about 1.5 million registered voters citywide.
4) Chicago Sky falter in 68-63 loss to the Connecticut Sun in Game 1 of WNBA semifinals. The Chicago Sky received a simple message from the Connecticut Sun in the opening game of the WNBA semifinals: This is going to be a dogfight. The Sky beat the Sun four times in the 2022 regular season after upsetting them 3-1 in the 2021 semifinals on the way to a WNBA title. But history never matters in the postseason, and the Sun brought a battle into Wintrust Arena in a 68-63 victory over the Sky in Game 1. Neither team shot better than 38% or scored more than 70 points. The loss sent players on both teams flying into the stanchion and crashing to the court.
5) 'Chicago Scavenger' book encourages readers to explore 17 city neighborhoods. The 'Chicago Scavenger' book on the hidden treasures of Chicago encourages people to get out and explore 17 neighborhoods while following clues. Author Jessica Milinaric explained the spiral bound on the book is so people can use it like a workbook. Chicago is ever-changing, so she said she chose to highlight long-standing restaurants and stores in the hopes that they are still around for years to come. All the hunts are outdoors so they can be enjoyed in a COVID safe way.
