Storms and Cooler Temps: Weekend Weather

Scattered thunderstorms are expected late this afternoon and overnight across the Chicago area with temps expected to cool off over the weekend.

The thunderstorms are possible mainly late this afternoon across the western and southern portions of the outlook area with the strongest storms becoming widespread tonight, according to the National Weather Service. A few of the strongest storms may present an isolated severe weather threat.

Locally heavy rainfall is possible with storms overnight, according to the National Weather Service. Areas along and south of Interstate 80 could see rainfall amounts of two to three inches.

There is a chance for thunderstorms again on Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon should be dry with partly sunny skies and temps reaching a high in the mid-70s. Sunday is expected to be sunny with temps again reaching a high in the mid-70s.

• Friday: Partly sunny. Patchy dense fog in the south suburbs early this morning. Highs in the lower 80s. South winds 5 to 10 mph.
• Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms likely. Lows in the upper 60s. Southeast winds 5 to 10 mph in the evening shifting to the southwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation 60 percent.
• Saturday: Cloudy with chance of showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms in the morning...then partly sunny in the afternoon. Not as warm. Highs in the mid 70s. West winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. Chance of precipitation 40 percent.
• Saturday Night: Clear. Lows in the lower 50s in the suburbs... But in the upper 50s downtown. Northwest winds 10 to 15 mph.
• Sunday: Sunny. Highs in the mid 70s. West winds 5 to 10 mph in the morning becoming southwest in the afternoon.
• Sunday Night: Clear. Lows in the mid 50s in the suburbs...but around 60 downtown.
• Monday: Sunny. Highs in the upper 70s.
