Top 5 stories in Chicago:

1) Potential work stoppage could derail Metra service Friday. The commuter rail system company announced yesterday that a potential work stoppage by freight railroad workers could happen as early as Friday, and would potentially impact most of its services. Metra, the fourth busiest commuter rail system in the United States by ridership, operating 242 stations on 11 rail lines. It serves the Chicago metropolitan area as well as the surrounding suburbs. Except for the Metra Electric and Rock Island lines, Metra's nine other lines either use tracks owned by freight railroads, intersect with tracks operated by the company's freight partners, or are dispatched by freight railroads. The Chicago Tribune reported that Amtrak has begun canceling trips scheduled out of Chicago due to the potential work stoppage. A spokesperson for the passenger rail agency said beginning yesterday, service on routes between Chicago and San Francisco, the Pacific Northwest and Los Angeles have been suspended. Amtrak also said service will be suspended along part of a fourth route out of Chicago, between Los Angeles and San Antonio.

2) Chicago mansion that makes cameo in 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' on market for $5.95M. A historic Queen Anne home in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood that once served as the backdrop for a scene in the movie "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" is listed for $5.95 million dollars. The home, at 1401 N. Dearborn St., famously known as the Luther McConnell House, was originally constructed in 1877 by Evanston-based architect Asa Lyon and then later remodeled in the 1920s by Chicago-based architect Richard Nelson, who, in his commission for the project, took design cues from the S.S. Normandie, a French ocean liner that made its maiden voyage in 1935. The 8,650 square foot house is graced with history, the listing says, from terracotta plaques and original millwork, to period-specific pendants and a marble-floored-foyer, to a grand staircase and a French Rococo-style formal dining room with a crystal chandelier.

3) Republican Darren Bailey now living on North Michigan Avenue to 'immerse' himself in city he keeps dissing. Republican gubernatorial nominee Darren Bailey is now living in the former John Hancock Center, one of Chicago's most iconic high-rises, to "immerse" himself "in the culture" of a city he's repeatedly dubbed a "hellhole." Bailey, a downstate farmer and state senator, confirmed during an impromptu news conference in the West Loop yesterday that he's renting an apartment in the city. "You can't deny there's problems here. And if we keep denying there's problems, the problems are going to get worse," Bailey said. "This whole entire journey, I have immersed myself in the culture of Illinois that I knew nothing about because I know that I must do that if we're going to lead this state and make it a great state and a great city that it deserves to be."

4) Ald. Ariel Reboyras retiring at end of term, joining City Council exodus. Ald. Ariel Reboyras (30th) announced yesterday he will retire from the City Council at the end of his term, after almost 20 years representing parts of the Belmont Cragin, Portage Park, and Irving Park neighborhoods. He's the 15th alderperson who has either stepped down mid-term since being elected in 2019, or announced they won't run again in 2023. Before he was first elected as an alderman in 2003, Reboyras worked as a Chicago Public Schools teacher, and as a city truck driver, before being promoted through the ranks to Deputy Commissioner for the Department of General Services. On the City Council, Reboyras served as chair of the City Council Public Safety Committee under former Mayor Rahm Emanuel, and is the current chair of the City Council Immigrant and Refugee Rights Committee under Mayor Lori Lightfoot. He's also a past chair of the City Council Latino Caucus.

5) First football game in Illinois history between 2 Black women coaches will be played in Chicago Thursday. A Chicago high school football game will be the first in Illinois history between two Black female head coaches. Konesha Rhea is in her second season as the head football coach for DuSable High School. Jousecelyn Mayfield calls the shots for Christian Fenger High School. The two will bring their teams to Gately Stadium, 810 E. 103rd St., for a matchup 4:15 p.m. Thursday. The coaches' journeys in Chicago youth football have long been intertwined, and the game will be "two sisters finally crossing paths again," Mayfield said. The football ranks are "no longer just a boys club," and coaching high schoolers is Rhea's calling: "give me these babies and let me teach them the game I love," she said.
