Students Across Chicagoland Walkout To Protest Gun Violence

National walkout day on Wednesday included 3,000 schools from across the U.S. as students made a public outcry for tougher gun laws.

Students from across the Chicago area took part in the national school walkout day Wednesday as part of a unified effort to protest gun violence. The walkout, which included 3,000 schools from across the U.S., came exactly a month after the mass shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Those who walked out at 10 a.m. stood in silence for 17 minutes, which was meant to serve as a minute-long vigil for each of the 17 people who lost their lives in the Florida shooting. Some school districts, concerned over safety, banned students from leaving their building and threatened disciplinary action for those who did.

The morning did not go off without a hitch. An Instagram post prompted officials to postpone a walkout in Romeoville. And a shelter-in-place was ordered for Dundee-Crown High School after a weapon was found in a neighborhood near the Carpentersville campus Wednesday morning.
