Dundee-Crown Shelter-In-Place Lifted; Weapon Found Near School
The shelter-in-place was ordered on the same morning that schools across the nation held walkouts to protest gun violence.

CARPENTERSVILLE, IL – A shelter-in-place was initiated Wednesday morning at Dundee-Crown High School after a weapon was found in a neighborhood near the campus, according to school officials. The shelter-in-place has since been lifted.
The measure was taken as a precautionary step after the weapon was located, according to a 10 a.m. post on the District 300 Facebook page. The post also noted that all students were safe and accounted for. Police have cleared and secured the scene.
"At no time were students in danger," according to the Facebook post. "Students are now resuming their school activities."

The shelter-in-place came on a day where students across the country held walkouts to protest gun violence. District 300 was among suburban schools districts that did not permit its students to walk out of their building during the walkouts. Any type of "walkout" or moment of silence had to occur within the building, Superintendent Fred Heid said in a letter to parents last month.
"Due to safety and supervision concerns we are discouraging any walkouts and will not support an activity that takes our students outside of the building. Doing so on a known date and time violates our safety polices and common sense," Heid said. "Again, our emphasis is to promote alternative means for students to express their feelings and beliefs related to this issue. Please know that any student who leaves the building will face disciplinary consequence."
