A late winter snowstorm hit the Chicago area Sunday night and into Monday morning, leaving several inches of snow.
The National Weather Service recorded the following 24-hour snowfall totals Chicago-area towns as of 7 a.m. Monday:

Lake Effect Snow Warning
Heavy lake effect snow will develop Monday evening in far northeast Illinois and then move southeast through Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service. The lake effect snow showers will shift into northwest Indiana on Tuesday where snow could continue into Tuesday night.

A lake effect snow warning has been issued for Lake, Cook and DuPage counties where localized additional snowfall totals of five to over nine inches of snow is possible.
Not all areas within the warning will experience heavy snow, but within the heaviest band of lake effect snow, snowfall rates of two inches or more per hour are possible.

The heavy snow rates and very low visibility due to the falling and blowing snow will likely result in dangerous travel conditions, including during the Tuesday morning commute. Travel is strongly discouraged in the warning area, according to weather officials.
